The big Bilby
The Bilby 2 has a 4-inch touchscreen, a lot more room than the original’s 2.8 inches. Album art looks better, audiobook covers are easier to tap, and reading on it is actually comfortable.
At 110 x 60 x 10 mm it’s still smaller than a phone. It’s for the kid who’s outgrown the little one.
A proper camera
There’s a 13-megapixel camera on the back for photos and video. The family dog, the school concert, the kangaroo on the side of the road. It all saves to the player for flicking back through later.
Load it up. Take it anywhere.
It runs Android 13 on an 8-core processor, so Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer and Audible all install like they would on a phone.
There’s 32GB built in, and it takes microSD cards up to 512GB. Download the playlists at home, switch WiFi off, and it’ll keep going in row 42 of a flight to Perth. The maker rates the battery at over 20 hours of playback.
Plays MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, M4A, APE, OGG and WMA. Videos too, including MP4, MKV and MOV.
Earphones in the box
Wired earphones come with it, so they’re listening the day it arrives. Or pair Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, or let the built-in speaker fill the room.
You decide what they can open
Like the original Bilby, it runs Android, so it takes the same parental control apps you’d put on a phone. We recommend AppBlock. It’s free on Google Play, and our setup guide walks you through hiding everything you don’t want them using. Not ready for the camera yet? Hide it like any other app.
Disclaimer: AppBlock is made by someone else, not by us, and it isn’t bulletproof. It’s brilliant for younger kids. An older, determined kid can work around any app-level lock, and that’s true of every Android device on the market, ours included. Set it up with your child, talk about the rules, and you’ll be fine.
Other fun stuff:
FM radio. A voice recorder. An eBook reader. A step counter. And a screen protector in the box, because they will drop it.
